More Than Planting Seeds: Building the Next Chapter of Able Journey Farm

Today was another one of those days that doesn’t look like much from the outside.

Just a raised bed, rows in the mulch, and tiny sunflower seeds tucked into the soil. Please ignore the weeds!

But for me, this represents another step toward a dream that’s slowly becoming reality.

These are another succession planting of our ProCut sunflowers. Rather than planting everything at once, we’re sowing new rows every couple of weeks so we’ll have a steady supply of blooms throughout the season instead of one big flush.

It’s one of the first lessons I’m learning as a flower farmer: growing beautiful flowers isn’t just about planting seeds—it’s about planning months ahead.

Every bed, every row, and every planting date is part of a much bigger picture.

Right now, these seeds don’t look like much.

In a few short weeks, they’ll become cheerful stems that will hopefully brighten someone’s kitchen table, celebrate a birthday, comfort a grieving family, or simply make someone smile after a long day.

That’s what makes flower farming different.

We’re not just growing plants.

We’re growing moments.

Learning One Bed at a Time

When I started this journey, I knew very little about growing cut flowers commercially.

Every day brings something new to learn—soil preparation, irrigation, succession planting, harvesting, bouquet making, marketing, and all the little details in between.

Some things work beautifully.

Some don’t.

And honestly, I think that’s part of the adventure.

I’m excited to share both the successes and the mistakes here on The Farm Journal.

Why “Able Journey”?

The name Able Journey Farm has always been about more than flowers.

Our vision is to build a farm that creates opportunities for people who are often overlooked—individuals with disabilities and those seeking a genuine second chance.

That mission is still a long way off.

Right now, we’re simply planting seeds.

But every meaningful journey starts exactly that way.

One small step at a time.

One row at a time.

One seed at a time.
