Choosing Joy Over Perfection
When I look at this photo, I have two choices.
The first is the one that comes naturally.
I see unfinished beds.
I see landscape fabric that isn’t perfectly straight, or even the correct kind.
I see areas that still need compost, irrigation, planting, and countless hours of work. I notice every little mistake because I know exactly where they are. I remember the things I wish I had done differently and the long list of tasks still waiting for me.
If I’m not careful, that’s all I’ll see.
But I’m learning to choose a different perspective.
Instead of seeing everything that’s left to do, I want to see everything that’s possible.
These aren’t empty beds.
They’re future bouquets.
They’re future farmers markets.
They’re flowers that will brighten someone’s kitchen table, celebrate a birthday, comfort a grieving friend, or simply make someone smile after a long day.
They’re opportunities.
Every flower farm starts somewhere. No one begins with perfectly organized fields overflowing with blooms. They begin with dirt, seeds, hard work, and a dream that seems much bigger than the space in front of them.
This picture captures that beginning.
It’s easy to believe that joy comes after everything is finished—after the weeds are gone, after every bed is planted, after the farm looks the way we imagined it would.
But if I wait until then, I’ll miss the best part of the journey.
The joy isn’t only in the finished bouquet.
It’s in the first seedling that emerges.
The first sunflower to bloom.
The first butterfly that visits.
The first harvest.
The first person who chooses one of our bouquets to take home.
Those moments are happening now, even while the work continues.
This farm is teaching me something I hope I’ll remember long after these beds are full of flowers.
Life will always have another project.
Another weed to pull.
Another thing to improve.
But if I only focus on what’s unfinished, I’ll overlook the beauty of what’s already growing.
So today, I’m choosing to see this picture differently.
Not as a list of everything that’s left to do.
But as a reminder that every dream begins with a patch of ground and the courage to believe something beautiful can grow there.
And honestly…
I can’t wait to see what blooms next.
